History, Economy & The Fight for Puadhi Dialect

To truly understand what is Puadh region, one must look beyond the map. Historically derived from the Sanskrit term 'Purv-ardh' (meaning Eastern Half), Puadh is the ancient gateway between the fertile Punjab plains and the Shivalik hills. It was established as a distinct cultural zone centuries ago, long before modern borders were drawn.

The region has birthed giants who shaped Punjab, including the legendary folk singer Surjit Bindrakhia (Ropar) and political visionary Kanshi Ram. Today, the economy of Puadh is the strongest in the state. While agriculture remains the backbone in Ropar and Patiala, Mohali (SAS Nagar) has evolved into the IT and commercial capital of Punjab, driving growth through international trade and technology.

Despite this growth, the authentic Puadhi dialect is at risk of disappearing. Due to the urbanization of Chandigarh and the dominance of standard Punjabi in movies, unique words like 'Ib' (now) and 'Mhane' (us) are fading. The Puadh Punjabi Podcast is committed to preserving this heritage by documenting unfiltered, unscripted conversations in the native tongue, ensuring the dialect survives for the next generation.
